Why can't I just replace the broken garage door spring myself?

Accepted Answer

A torsion spring holds hundreds of pounds of stored tension to counterbalance a door that can weigh several hundred pounds, and a spring that lets go or a winding bar that slips can break bones. Beyond the safety risk, the spring has to be matched to your door's exact weight by wire gauge, inside diameter, and length - guess wrong and the door is either impossible to lift or it burns out the opener trying. We size it to the real door, re-wind it to spec, and re-balance the whole door so it lifts effortlessly.

How much does a spring repair cost, and will the price change once you're here?

We quote one flat price before the wrench comes out, and you approve that number before any work starts - there are no surprise add-ons once we're underway. The exact figure depends on your door's weight and whether you need one spring or a matched pair, so we measure and size it on site. If something else turns up while we're there, we stop and quote that separately for your approval rather than just doing it.

Should I replace just the one broken spring, or both?

If your door runs on two springs and one has snapped, the other is the same age and very close to failing too, so we almost always recommend replacing them as a matched pair. Doing both keeps the door balanced, saves you a second service call within a few months, and lets us re-balance the door correctly the first time. We'll always tell you straight if a spring genuinely has years of life left - we'd rather keep you as a customer than oversell you one part.

My opener is grinding and slow - does it need replacing or just a repair?

Accepted Answer

Not always a replacement. A grinding, slow opener is often the door itself - worn rollers, a balance problem, or a tired spring making the opener fight the weight - not the motor. We diagnose the whole system first, and if it really is the opener, we'll install a quiet belt-drive unit and set the travel limits and force properly. If it's the door dragging, fixing that is usually cheaper than a new opener and we'll tell you so.

What does the $39 22-point tune-up actually include, and is it just a sales call?

It's a real 22-point service: we balance the door, tighten the hardware, lube the rollers and track, check the cables and spring for wear, and test the auto-reverse safety so a slow or sticking door doesn't turn into a 6am breakdown. It is not a foot in the door to upsell you - plenty of our tune-up visits end with us telling the homeowner their springs have years left and nothing needs replacing. If we do find a worn part, we quote it flat and separately, and the call is on you whether or not you have us fix it.

Do you carry a warranty on the parts you install?

Yes. The heavy-gauge, high-cycle torsion springs and nylon rollers we install carry a lifetime parts warranty on those components, and a full door installation is backed by a 7-year parts warranty on the springs and rollers we supply. We use thicker-wire springs rated for more cycles than the builder-grade parts most doors come with, which is a big part of why we're comfortable standing behind them that long.

Question 8

I dented a panel backing out - do I have to replace the whole door?

Usually not. If the rest of the door is sound, we can source matching panels in your door's exact profile and color so the repair blends in and you keep the door you've got. We'll only recommend a full replacement if the dent has bent the tracks or compromised the structure - and if you're in an HOA neighborhood, we match profiles your subdivision already approves so the swap clears with no fuss.
